SCARBOROUGH – Nearly 170 runners and walkers gathered Saturday morning to help raise money for the Eastern Trail Alliance and honor its founder, John Andrews, with his eponymous, third annual race, the John Andrews Memorial 5K.

Beginning at O’Reilly’s Cure Restaurant and Bar – the chief sponsor for the race – participants ran and walked an off-road section of the Eastern Trail out-and-back on the scenic Scarborough Marsh.

“When I tell volunteers this race is for John Andrews, they always say, ‘This is a great event and a great trail,’” said Eastern Trail Alliance Executive Director Nancy Borg.

Andrews died in February 2017 and left behind both family and an project of significant magnitude designed for community use and recreation, the Eastern Trail.

The trail is part the East Coast Greenway, a 65-mile stretch from Kittery to South Portland that the Eastern Trail Alliance endeavors to build, maintain and promote.

The alliance’s website describes Andrews as “an inspiring man of vision and untiring spirit. John’s vision to create the Eastern Trail started in the early 1990s. He was persistent, but patient, and made tremendous progress in a relatively short amount of time.

“After starting this amazing effort, John lived on the trail, used the trail, and guided countless others to understand and appreciate this great resource.”

Proceeds from the race benefits the alliance.
